We have open weekends throughout the year when many additional attractions are brought into the site and extra items are available for viewing in addition to our usual attractions which are:

Clacton Cafe - serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and other goodies

Gift Shop

Museum Display on the Origins of Electrical Theory & Experimentation.

Shunting Demonstrations

Class 503 Wirral Unit open for visitors.

The details of our 2012 events are as follows:

April - Saturday & Sunday 14th/15th
Enthusiasts Weekend

Join us to celebrate the return to traffic of Heysham Power Station battery locomotive 'Doug Tottman'. This event will be all electric with the shunting demonstrations in the hands of both our operational electric locomotives.

June - Saturday & Sunday 9th/10th
Technology Weekend

Electric Railway Museum will hold a display celebrating some of the advances in technology in the last 60 years since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II.

July - Saturday & Sunday 21st/22nd
The Good Old Days Weekend

A weekend looking back to a different time when there were no mobile phones, no games consoles and television was only for the rich.

September - Saturday & Sunday 8th/09th
Heritage Open Weekend

A Nationwide event whereby numerous buildings, museums and sites are opened to the Public so they may explore the nation's heritage.

Admission To All Events Is Free Of Charge


Visiting the Electric Railway Museum at Other Times.


We are available for visits throughout the year subject to prior notice. We do not recommend you turn up ad-hoc as you may find the site closed. Please contact us if you would like to arrange a visit outside of normal opening hours. It will help us if you suggest suitable dates, the size of your party, any areas of specific interest and if any of your party have any special requirements.

We have entertained several private visits since establishing the museum, ranging from local societies and enthusiast groups, to individuals with an interest in a specific item on our site.
