A busy summer for arrivals at Coventry

Electric Railway Museum are delighted to announce the latest arrival at Coventry, APT-P non-driving motor 49006, on loan from the National Railway Museum.

APT-P Power car arrives at Coventry

It was built by BREL Derby in 1979 as part of the famous tilting Class 370 Advanced Passenger Train, and saw service 1983-1985 on the London-Glasgow route. It was then used for electric locomotive development work, resulting in the Class 91 design, now used on the East Coast Main Line.

Unusually for a vehicle in the centre of a train, it was built with no passenger accommodation; most of the space being taken up with electrical equipment. This meant the train was effectively divided into two halves, and passengers were normally unable to move from one half to the other.

Following withdrawal, most of the six APT sets were scrapped, leaving one set (preserved at Crewe) and 49006, claimed by the National Railway Museum. In recent years, 49006 has been stored at Shildon.

We plan to cosmetically restore the vehicle, and it will be on display at our open weekend 10th & 11th September 2011.

Electric Railway Museum would like to thank the Transport Trust for their generous financial assistance in moving the APT to Coventry.
